From the Arena: SWWA Derby & Futurity Barrel Racing Highlights at Rocky Top Arena

There’s something about the first day of the SWWA Spring Derby & Futurity barrel racing that never gets old. The smell of fresh shavings, the sound of hooves warming up in the alley, trailers rolling in from every corner of the Pacific Northwest, it’s the arrival of spring at Rocky Top Arena in Salkum, Washington, and it was every bit as good as we remembered.

Friday, March 27th opened the 2026 edition of one of the most anticipated barrel racing events on the Northwest calendar. For competitors and families who’ve been making the drive to this tucked-away corner of Lewis County year after year, pulling through those gates felt, as it always does, a little like coming home.

A Family-Built Foundation

Rocky Top Arena didn’t become the heart of Pacific Northwest barrel racing by accident. Since 1996, Viki and Vanda Friedrich have poured decades of horsemanship and hospitality into this place, and it showed in every detail of the 2026 event, from the well-maintained ground to the warm welcome at the gate. At Rocky Top, you’re never just a competitor with a number. You’re part of the family.

That legacy was felt especially on opening day, when familiar faces reunited over coffee (and more than a few stops at the beloved Burger Barn) and first-timers quickly discovered what all the fuss was about. The community that gathered in Salkum this past March was, once again, one of the kindest and most knowledgeable groups of horse people you’ll find anywhere in the Northwest.

Fresh Legs, Fresh Season

Friday’s time-only session gave competitors a chance to feel out the ground and settle their horses after the haul in. For futurity horses especially, those moments mattered. A young horse’s first exposure to a new arena, new sounds, and a new crowd can shape the whole weekend, and Rocky Top’s atmosphere, electric with anticipation but never overwhelming, proved to be the right environment for horses and riders alike to find their feet.

Trainers walked patterns, riders checked their lines, and everyone sized up the competition with that familiar mix of camaraderie and quiet focus that defines the futurity world. The Northwest barrel racing community is tight-knit, and nowhere was that more evident than in the warm-up pen, where riders cheered each other on between runs and shared advice without hesitation.

What Was at Stake

The SWWA Spring Derby & Futurity carries two coveted titles in the Northwest: the Futurity Championship for horses (typically 3-5 yrs old) making their mark in their first competitive season, and the Derby horses (typically 5-8 yrs old) stepping into their prime. For the trainers and owners who invested months, sometimes years, into developing these young athletes, this weekend was the moment all that work would either pay off or teach them something new.

The Open races ran alongside, giving seasoned competitors the chance to chase added money while the future stars of the sport found their footing. It was, as always, a weekend that honored both the new and the proven.

A Night Full of Promise

As the sun dipped behind the timber hills around Salkum and competitors settled their horses in for the night, the anticipation was almost electric. Stalls were bedded, blankets adjusted, and conversations over tailgates stretched late into the evening. Looking back, it was exactly the kind of opening day that sets a great weekend in motion.

The 2026 SWWA Spring Derby & Futurity had arrived, and it did not disappoint. It made for a wonderful start to a fun weekend of barrel racing at Rocky Top Arena.
